Sevilla appoints Sampaoli as Head Coach

Jorge Sampaoli has returned as Sevilla manager less than 24 hours after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, the club announced on Thursday.

Sampaoli, 62, guided Sevilla to a fourth-place finish in the 2016–17 season. He, then, resigned to take over as Argentina’s national team coach. He guided Argentina at the 2018 World Cup where the Albiceleste lost to France in the round of 16.

Since leaving his position as Marseille’s manager in July, Sampaoli had been without a job. After winning the 2015 Copa America with Chile, he began his first tenure in Seville. Additionally, he was in charge of the Brazilian teams Santos and Atletico Mineiro.

Julen Lopetegui was dismissed following Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla’s sixth loss in 10 games.

Despite Sevilla’s disastrous start to the season, the fans gave Lopetegui a standing ovation on Wednesday at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.
