Super Falcons play out 3-3 draw with Portugal in summer invitational

The women national team, the Super Falcons, played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Portugal in the summer invitational holding in the United States.

Super Falcons forward, Rasheedat Ajibade, scored in stoppage time to give Nigeria a share of the spoils.

The match was played on Sunday.

Portugal went ahead 2-0 at the BBVA Stadium on an own goal in the 22nd minute; followed by captain Carole Costa’s goal off a well- placed free kick in the 33rd minute. However, Nigeria cut the deficit before half time with a Michelle Alozie’s goal. But Portugal stretched their lead after Telma Encarnacao scored early in the second half.

Nevertheless, another own goal pulled the Super Falcons closer before Ajibade’s equalizer.

Portugal lost to the U.S. national team 1-0 in the Summer Series opener on Thursday. On the other hand, Nigeria fell 1-0 to Jamaica.

Nigeria will go on to face the U.S. team in Austin at the new Q2 Stadium on Thursday to wrap up the Summer Series.

The Super Falcons are coached by University of Pittsburgh head coach Randy Waldrum.

In its first game against Jamaica, the side conceded the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute. Deneisha Blackwood, who featured in her home stadium as a member of the Houston Dash, scored the game-winning goal off an open shot in the box.

In the 83rd minute, the Super Falcons had its best chance of the game. However, a powerful shot bounced off the post and bounced away from danger.

In the day’s other game, the US women’s national team narrowly edged out Portugal 1-0.

Portugal, whom the Falcons drew with in their second game, are the only European team competing in the Summer Series.
