“Dear Editor,
My name is Enitan. I am a 36-year-old mother of two. I have been married for five years but all through the years, I have been enduring my marriage instead of enjoying it because my husband, Ben, turned out to be what I never expected when we were dating.
I knew Ben through my cousin and from the first day we met, he made it clear that he wanted to marry me and since I was under a lot of pressure from my parents who felt that I should be married at 31, I accepted his proposal.
At least, I felt, my family will get off my back for once. We dated for only six months before we got married. During the period we date, Ben showed me that he was a very caring and loving man who was always willing to do anything for me.

Little did I know that he was pretending all along and that he had a sinister habit well hidden. It surfaced just two weeks after we got married when he came home very late and quite drunk. He requested for his food and as a woman, I complained about the time he came back and his drunken state but Ben descended on me and beat me blue-black for daring to question him.
When he became sober in the morning, he begged me so much, claiming that he was not in his senses when he beat me up. I should have seen the signs but I forgave him. That was the mistake I made as I have become his punching bag all these years.
Ben has such a short temper and whenever he gets angry, he will pounce on me. It does not end there as he also rapes me anytime he feels like it, whether I am in the mood for sex or not. He has also added another dimension to his attitude and that is not caring about what happens to me and our child.
He has also added cheating on the side as he keeps different women and I hear how he spends money on them while he practically does not know how I manage to feed his child and take care of his needs.
Through all of these, one of my male colleagues, Emma, has been there for me, providing me a shoulder to lean on. I tell him all of my problems and he is always ready to help, even with money.

The problem here is that I am getting so close and attached to Emma, so much that I know it will be a matter of time before something happens between us and I will not have the heart to resist him. I believe I have fallen in love with him and I will not be able to help myself if push comes to shove.
I still love my husband but he is pushing me into the arms of another man.
Enitan.”
