Veteran actress, Joke Silva was at the CORA BOOK TREK on Monday, November 10, 2014 joining other performers as they read excerpts from different books earmarked for the Lagos Book and Art Festival. The event which took place at the British Council office, Ikoyi, Lagos, marked the start of the 16th edition of the festival and had writer and filmmaker, Chris Ihidero as the host. Other readers include actor/filmmaker Francis Onwochei, Tunji Sotimiri and Dapo Adeleke.
According to Mr. Jahman Anikulakpo, the book trek was a programme organised for schools around Lagos State. “The concept of the reading club is gone from most of our schools. So we decided to take the book to the schools to see if we can build Readers’ and Book Clubs. But because of limited capacity we were unable to go to so many schools this year. So we decided to take one local government, Ejigbo LGA, that responded to us and we were able to run workshops for about fifty students,” he said.
A book review contest was also organized for the students and one of the highlights of the Book Trek as the announcement of the eight finalists. The top three will be announced and awarded during the festival.
There was a stirring poetry performance by AJ House of Poetry, made up of students from schools in Ajegunle.
A list of the festival books can be found here.
