The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has pledged a more fervent political campaign from his side ahead of the elections in 2018, saying his tactics will suffocate his rivals including supporters of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In reaction to various media reports, Governor Wike made this statement on Friday, August 12, 2022.
He spoke during the commissioning of the Rivers House of Assembly residential quarters.
The newspapers in question claimed that the governor had sued the party; its presidential candidate; as well as the governor of Sokoto State over the results of the presidential primary; adding that it had taken the PDP’s symbols, including its flag, out of the Rivers State government building.
The publications, he alleged, were the product of his opponents who are supporters of Atiku.
Governor Wike denied both claims, warning the alleged Atiku supporters to let him focus on government. However, he pledged to “choke them” and said he would start real-time politics after finishing the series of project inauguration and flag-off.
Atiku was also cautioned by Wike to be mindful of supporters who he claimed were the same people that worked to derail his chances of winning the 2019 presidential election.
According to Governor Wike, the reason he invited Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, to commission the project in Port Harcourt was because the federal lawmaker made it easier for his administration to obtain the Paris Club Refund, which was used in part to carry out the House of Assembly Quarters project.
He said he holds the Speaker in high esteem; despite being one of the PDP leaders who plotted against him being elected the Speaker of the House in 2019.
According to him, he does not regret the action, because he was playing the role deserving of an opposition figure; even though some of those who plotted with him later betrayed him and turned around to support Mr. Gbajabiamila to emerge the presiding officer.
In his speech, the Speaker encouraged Governor Wike to choke his detractors.
He told Governor Wike that the same people who foiled the plot to stop his speakership ambition were the same people who betrayed the Rivers State Governor at the PDP Presidential primary.
Gbajabiamila said, although he and Governor Wike belong to different political parties; they both share a determination to ensure a united Nigeria.
The Speaker asserted his conviction on the phrase that in politics there is no permanent friendship or enmity.
He, however, expressed the hopes that his friendship with Governor Wike will be a permanent one.
