Wike raises alarm over plans by politicians to employ thugs in 2023 elections

Governor Nyesom Wike has raised the alarm, stating that certain unidentified politicians were enlisting violent gangs in an effort to incite fear in Rivers state ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The finding, based on intelligence reports, also suggested, according to Wike in a Sunday night state broadcast; August 7, 2022 that some hotel and entertainment venue owners were being paid to use their properties as headquarters for the assembling of the alleged political thugs throughout the state.

The Governor vowed to take the intelligence assessment seriously; even as he issued a warning that his administration would not give any politician—regardless of status; the opportunity to disturb the current state of peace and security in Rivers.

Wike said, “Similarly, we will not allow any political party, be it All Progressives Congress; the Peoples Democratic Party, or the Social Democratic Party to threaten the safety and security of lives and property; during the campaigns with mayhem, thuggery, or violence.

“Accordingly, we have already alerted and set the security agencies on the trail of these misguided politicians and leaders of political parties and stop them in their tracks with the full weight of the law.

“We also wish to warn owners of hotels and proprietors of relaxation centres to take notice; desist from releasing their facilities for politicians and party leaders to use to meet; plot against the peace, safety, and security of our State.”

He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of lives; as well as property throughout the State. Further, he reassured residents of his determination to continue to spare no effort to keep Rivers State safe and secure.

“We urge residents to be vigilant while going about with their normal activities and promptly report any suspicious gatherings or movements in your vicinity to the attention of the security agencies for necessary action.”
