Wike slams Buhari over insecurity, urges him to resign

Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, declared on Thursday, April 21, in Jalingo, Taraba State’s capital, that any administration that cannot protect its residents’ lives and property does not deserve to be in power.

Wike, a presidential candidate running on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) platform, made the remarks; while in the state to rally support from delegates and party loyalists.

If he had been president, Wike claimed he would have resigned. This is because he was dissatisfied with the way the All Progressives Congress (APC); led by President Muhammadu Buhari, is handling the country’s security concerns.

According to him, “I would have resigned if I were President Buhari. I would have addressed Nigerians and told them that I have tried my best; but my best is not good enough, therefore, I am resigning.”

Wike, who was of the view that “there is no part of Nigeria that is safe today”, observed that; “even Katsina, the President’s state, is one of the most affected.”

Meanwhile, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that the development of state police would be a better alternative than community policing. This is in the face of rising insecurity in the country.

When the leadership of the National Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen in Nigeria paid him a courtesy call in Abeokuta on Wednesday, April 20, Obasanjo made this statement.

Obasanjo praised the initiative behind the body’s founding. He said that the development demonstrated that certain local chairmen in the country were better than even the country’s top elected leaders.

When reacting to one of the presenters, Chinwe Monu-Olarewaju, on the development of community police to combat the rise of insecurity; the former President joked that the proposal needed to be revised.

“Our situation in Nigeria concerns everyone, particularly, the case of terrorism. The case has gotten over the issue of community police. It is now the State police. It is from that State Police that we can now be talking about community police,” he said.
