Wizkid: ‘I left EME records penniless’

In a recent interview Nigerian recording artist, Wizkid has made a shocking revelation. The international act revealed what happened when he left Banky W’s Empire Mate Entertainment, EME.

Wizkid revealed during a session with Capital Radio on Tuesday, October 8 that he had no money when he left EME in 2013.

He stated that he was broke and was not financially buoyant when he decided to quit Banky’s record label. At the time, he had a contract dispute with the label for over a year. Wizkid did not leave EME until the official release of his second studio album, Ayo (Joy) in 2014.

In his words, Wizkid said, ‘When I left the label, nobody knew the story, just my boy Bass who is with me right here. I literally had to leave the label with zero naira at the time and I was Wizkid’.

He continued, ‘I thought to myself, I can’t continue like this. I am thankful to Banky for everything he has done to me, but at a certain point, an artist would certainly want to get to a stage where he wants to progress.’

‘After the release of the album, I remember myself and my boys were gisting and I told them we’ll tour the world with this one’.

Wizkid part ways with EME

In February 2013, Wizkid tweeted a subliminal message and tweaked his Twitter account.

He also moved out of the E.M.E mansion in Lagos and acquired his own home in the Lekki Phase 1 area.

Prior to Wizkid’s subliminal tweets, Banky W pacified fans by assuring them that nothing was amiss.

Furthermore, it was reported that troubles within E.M.E started as early as the E.M.E All Stars concert in 2012. It was also reported that money was at the centre of the controversy.

On 30 April 2013, Nigerian Entertainment Today reported that Wizkid and E.M.E reunited after contract negotiations.

Star Boy departed E.M.E following the release of his second studio album and expiration of his 5-year contract.

He became engulfed in rifts with several artists, including his erstwhile boss Banky W and former label mate Skales.
