World Pharmacists Day: Society tasks pharmacists on achieving SDGs

As the world celebrate pharmacists, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) on Sunday advised its members on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the need for them to continue to stay united in line of action.

The Chairman of PSN Kwara staste, Mr. Adejuwon Otelaja, made this statement in Ilorin.

The theme of World Pharmacists Day this year is “Pharmacy United in Action for a Healthier World”. It aims to honour and recognize the contribution of pharmacists to enhancing global health.

Otelaja claims that the day is also intended to support and encourage initiatives that advance global healthcare.

He said that as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, all UN Member States created and adopted the SDGs in 2015.

“The SDGs which consist of 17 main goals, each with multiple specified targets, were developed based on decades of previous global health work by individual countries and the UN, including the Millennium Development Goals,” he said.

Otelaja emphasized that it serves as a model for promoting health around the world; while acknowledging the importance of and link between addressing issues with climate change, education, inequality, and economic growth.

Furthermore, he noted that pharmacists are well renowned for helping patients get the most out of their meds; and for teaching patients how to take their medications so they may quickly recover.

He added that observing the day is also a step toward appreciating these workers’ efforts; and pressing for improvements to their working conditions and facilities.
